Face-to-face teaching sessions offer a flexible training programme tailored to individual care homes with the goal of empowering staff to deliver better clinical outcomes and improve rates of admission avoidance in respect of residents with a urinary catheter.
Following the delivery of the training programme. Ongoing peer support mentoring and clinical supervision can be tailored to individual care homes.
Having a urinary catheter is known to negatively impact the users quality of life and mortality due to their long-term health being diminished by unresolved catheter problems that often result in repeated hospital admissions.
It is estimated 34,500 people in the UK Care Homes have urinary catheters, with many Care Home organisations reporting an increase in staff workload and poor resident outcomes owing to a lack of knowledge and education surrounding evidence based catheter management and problem solving.
At catheter-in-situ, training will focus on making learning fun and enjoyable. By participating in group work within the ‘classroom’ staff can share experiences and explore new ideas and gain new knowledge and skills that promote a supportive work environment and high quality care.
Utilising the Care Home as a classroom through peer support, mentoring and clinical supervision is also available as an education tool for Nursing Homes wishing to adopt a Link Tutor approach and not a dependancy model for training.
Recent research suggests that carers disliked e-learning as an educational tool. The ‘classroom’ promotes critical thinking by participating in group work. Encourages collaborative working and improves staff motivation and teamwork.
Over the past ten years of specialising in continence care and catheter management I have been involved in project management, policy development, education and training through workshops and initiatives. In addition to fostering collaborations and partnerships, I have also worked closely with Infection Control to contribute to the NHS long-term plan goal of a 50% reduction in Gram-negative bloodstream infections (GBNSIs) by focusing on reducing Catheter associated UTIs (CAUTI’s) in the local area.
